The Community Centre committee have received notification that they were unsuccessful in their bid to get a grant from WREN to renovate the Main Hall.
Vice – Chair Sue Hardacre said “There is no doubt that this came as a bit of a surprise. We have been so successful in achieving our goals recently that we had begun to think we were a little bit invincible. However, we are very fortunate that we have a sufficiently large amount of income in reserve to ensure that some work can still take place. It was always our intention to spend some of this income as part of the renovation scheme.”
The plans include the renewal of the main Hall ceiling and the replacement of the current, inefficient strip lighting with more energy efficient LED bulbs. All other Hall lighting was to be upgraded to provide for a wider range of lighting conditions to suit a range of uses, including parties and theatre shows. The high-level curtains were to be replaced with electrically operated black-out blinds to give better conditions for films and formal presentations. The high-level walkways needed work to make them safer. The work planned is the first major, internal upgrade since the Hall was built – though CW&C, as the landlord, did install new windows a few years ago.
Sue said “There are still other grant options that we can pursue, and we are doing so with vigour. However, it would be sensible to have a Plan B should we have to rely on our own resources. A small sub-committee will meet to decide what works might be undertaken soon. They will decide on priorities and the central questions they will be looking at are ‘What gives best value for money?’ and ‘What investment will benefit the largest number of Centre users?”
The Committee is very aware of the support given to the Centre by the community and how much the facility is valued. A good proportion of income generated from this support will be ploughed back so that future generations will have a brighter and better equipped Centre to enjoy in the years to come.
The Community Centre is delighted to offer a welcome to Wright Marshall, Fine Art Auctioneers who are to hold a charity Valuation Event on Thursday February 15th from 10.00 am to 2.00pm. The event is in aid of The Joshua Tree, a charity that supports families dealing with childhood cancers.
A highlight of the event will be a talk at 10.30 by Rachel Houston-Holland, a very experienced valuer with a wide experience in the wonderful world of Antiques. She is a specialist in Asian Art and has appeared on the ITV show “Masterpiece” with Alan Titchmarsh. She will be ably assisted by Francesca Garvey whose specialism is silver and jewelry. However, they both have wide exp
erience and are well qualified to deal with any treasures that might come their way, so you are encouraged to bring along any item that you think will be of interest.
Each valuation will cost £1 with the proceeds going to The Joshua Tree.
Sue Hardacre says “We are delighted to have been approached again to host a charity event. The perennial appeal of The Antiques Roadshow shows how much we are fascinated by our rich heritage and the linking of this event with such a worthy cause should make it an enjoyable day.”
Whenever old objects are valued there is always to possibility, however remote, that your old plant pot might turn out to be a Parisian Bronze Jardiniere, or the drab painting in the loo, a Van Eyck. But the fun and the pleasure are mainly found in discovering the history of an object that is, and will remain, a much-loved family treasure.
Work has begun on the new timber, storage shed to the rear of the Community Centre. The ground clearance and the construction of the concrete base should be completed by Christmas, weather permitting, with the structure being completed in the new year.
Alan Wilkinson, Chair of the Community Centre Committee says “To be precise, this is NOT a shed for storing timber, but a shed constructed of timber! Half of the space will be rented out at a modest cost to Ashton Hayes Theatre Club so that they can store their costumes and props in a safe and dry place. The rest will be used as storage for a range of items that currently clutter parts of the Centre”.
One benefit from the extra storage space will be the reduction of items stored under the stage. Though this space is large it is extremely difficult to access items that get put to the rear. The spare blue-seat chairs will also go there, freeing up space that is currently being considered as an occasional office for the PCSO.
Two trees have been removed, and the planning consent obtained requires that three replacements be planted after completion. The walls will be painted green, and shrubs will be planted along the rear wall to soften the visual impact that the building will have on near neighbours.
The cost of this extension is coming out of Community Centre funds which have been accumulated from the high level of use the Centre gets. Alan says “We are delighted that we can demonstrate to the community that their support is being acknowledged by improvements to the building. We would also like to thank CW&C, our landlords, who have been very supportive of all the changes we are planning for their building.”
The Committee are also drawing up plans to apply for grants for major improvements to the Main Hall
Minerva Arts in Chester is bringing a creative theatre workshop for young people to Tarvin Community Centre on Thursday December 28th. Running from 10.00 until 3.00 the session will concentrate on seasonal storytelling and the creation of short plays to be performed for family and friends. The day has been organised for children from 7 – 13 and is run by qualified and experienced personnel. The cost will be £10 for the day.
Minerva Arts was formed in 2007 by two University of Chester graduates and aims to develop a range of creative skills in young people. Drama can be a way of building up the ‘soft skills’ that can be overlooked in today’s tight and prescriptive curriculum. As well as developing the imagination, drama helps young people cooperate with others, focus on a common goal and build up self-confidence in public. It is also a great way to make friends and to have fun in a safe and nurturing environment.

The show is part of the Big Imaginations Festival of Children’s Theatre, and this creative extra is all part of the fun. Cheshire Rural Touring Arts have acquired the services of local artist Andy Leigh who will have all the material to produce some of the items featured in the show. I think crows might feature!
If you have tickets you can come along about 5.00pm and join in the fun with Andy before the show starts at 6.00pm.
Tickets for the show are very much available both online and at the Post Office and are priced at £6 for grown-ups and £4 for children. Promoter Sue Hardacre says “It seems that people are taking a bit of time to make up their minds, but I am sure that this colourful production of tales from India will entertain”
